I have worked on few SaaS based application and realized that for that India has a huge market to be tapped in this regard. With majority of hospitals relying some archic model solution, SaaS has still a huge scope. The only limiting factor can be net connectivity. At your place I would like to further drill down to the segment where I would like to attack, like dental, cardio etc. Because a dedicated SaaS based app will have more appeal than a generic one. Hope it answers your query.
Interesting point. When we try and look at the hospitals around the country very limited number of hospitals use an automated system for health information management. And the ones which use have a simple systems made out of software technologies common and easily available. So my take on this would be that first the Hospitals in India need to evolve in terms of the usage of Automated systems. This also depends on the volumes of operations. Hence, I don't see a SAAS model being implemented for Hospital Management IS in the near future.
First of all the awareness about use of information systems and the returns that can be envisaged by use if IT in healthcare is not clear to doctor entrepreneurs. The large corporate hospitals and to some extent , some percentage of the secondary care care or trust run hospitals use some kind information system but no where near to a comprehensive IT system to capture data , and actually an electronic MIS. Many hospitals use the information system for billing, pharmacy and record keeping and book keeping, let alone using it for patient monitoring or actual EMR , The IT spend of the hospitals are very low in India ( this could be a possible indication for SAAS coming into practice if they charge it per bed per day and also in a retail way ) There is no regulation from government or any regulatory authority to make it mandatory for information storage and retrieval purpose except emergency / cases which could have medico legal necessity. The IT companies do not see much in return to improve the solution they providing by huge investment in research and development and there is a stress on selling out of box software. Customizations are avoided because that again keeps higher cost involvement and other complications, Apart from these there are hundred other things where in several other ways the healthcare organisations differ in functioning. Thus, though the SAAS concept may look lucrative and simpler may not be actually that easy to implement and make it a success ,however there is certainly a future for this, and with similar working environments or work flows hospitals information system can benefit from this.
